Bangkok 3rd July 2013
July 10, 2013
My family had a short 5 days getaway to Bangkok.
Dad is there for work while the rest of us tagged along to explore Bangkok.
SGD1 = 24.2 Baht
The thriving business in Suvarnabhumi Airport is the prepaid cards! A few network companies have stores there for visitors to purchase their prepaid cards. There was a special promotion on-going which was unlimited 3G for a month w/ 100 Baht (SGD4.13) worth of talk-time by paying 299 Baht (SGD12.35) by DTac. We got ours from DTac network which is good enough for WhatsApp-ing and Instagram-ing. Do remember to compare prices across the different networks because some of the prepaid cards are ridiculously expensive.
The Phaya Thai Express Line (Express train) from airport to Phaya Thai takes about 20 minutes or so and it is (as seen above) very comfortable and very quiet. You can purchase your tickets at the airport. Walk towards the Express Line which is two levels down the Arrival Hall and then there'll be a kiosk for you to purchase the tickets.

Phaya Thai is an interchange that links to their BTS (which works just like our MRT). I would recommend that you purchase a One-Day Pass at BTS if you will be travelling to more than 2 - 3 places that very day. One-Day Pass costs 130 Baht (SGD5.37) which is more economical. Bear in mind that you can only use the One-Day Pass in BTS. You cannot use it for their local MRT or Airport Link.
The above train tickets shown are not the One-Day Passes. Those were the train tickets that we bought every time we head to our next destination. It has the BTS map at the back that helps us to see which BTS we should take. We did not purchase the One-Day Pass on the first few days because we didn't come to notice the existence of the pass so we queued at the kiosks to get our train tickets every single time we travel to different shopping malls. I personally feel that it's a hassle to queue just to get tickets and having to insert cash and then to receive lots of shillings from the machines. So, all hail to One-Day Pass!

Super yummy BBQ Chicken Kebab for 25 Baht in Siam Paragon Basement.
My first ever Krispy Kreme. 27 Baht for the original glazed donuts.
This donut melts in my mouth. It friggin' melts!
Just thought I would want to have a picture taken within their pretty hyper market hahaha.

We tried Somtam for dinner, a restaurant that sells local food in Siam Center. I definitely drank more cold water than eating their spicy food.
This restaurant serves very spicy, clear and delicious Tom Yum Soup. It's not very pricey as well.
On a side note, Charles and Keith in Bangkok is 1x more expensive than that in Singapore even after their sale price. We finally understood why so many tourists would enter Charles and Keith in Singapore and exit with bags and bags of Charles and Keith products. It's actually more affordable in Singapore since it's a Singapore brand. Most of the branded goods are more expensive in Bangkok than in Singapore.
We stayed in Novotel Hotel that is really not worth the price and the hotel will look very modern only in the 90s.
Now, it just looks like some outdated hotels in Siam. However, the service is pretty good and the hotel is 5 minutes walk to Siam BTS.
They serve good breakfast buffet that costs SGD22+ per person if I'm not wrong.
This pretty much sums up our first day in Bangkok.
